Skyclad – seen on May 12th in Zoetermeer – Holland (by Tony Kerklaan)

When Skyclad-frontman Martin Walkyier left the band to reform Sabbat (in the shape of Return to the Sabbat), many people thought this would be the end for Skyclad. I’m happy to say the least is true. The five remaining members decided to continue and that has proven to be a very wise decision. Skyclad is more alive then ever!
Opening for Fish in Paradiso, Amsterdam, on May 11th, 1200 people saw ‘this band from England’. Most of them had never heard of Skyclad before, but during the show more and more people got involved and danced away to the catchy tunes. The five remaining members re-arranged the most famous Skyclad songs of the last decade to a more folky feal. The set lasted for about 45 minutes and it was a big success.
Martin’s departure of course came as a big shock to all of the remaining members. They really hadn’t seen it coming and at first they thought this would be the end for the remaining Claddies. However, plans of bringing in a new singer were quickly thrown overboard as Kevin would take over the singing part. Another wise decision as Kevin did really well. All of the songs were really done great and also the lyrics were very understandable (sometimes a problem with the old Skyclad). The future songwriting will also be done by Kevin and if we may believe Graeme ‘Bean’ English, it seems he’s doing a pretty good job.
Being in Holland they wanted to do another gig. A place in Zoetermeer was found but unfortunately only a few people came to the concert. Main reasons: most people didn’t know about the show because of a lack of promotion. Some of them stayed away because of the departure of Martin (next time you must come, Arnaut) and others were probably hanging out on the beach since it was a very hot and sunny day (a very rare thing to happen in rainy Holland). The people who weren’t there missed something great. It was a great concert. Only the fourth show for this line-up, but the first show lasting for 1,5 hours, so Kevin (the new singer) was busy trying to remember the lyrics to songs they would play for the first time with this line-up. It was a superb mix of acoustic and electric played Skyclad-songs. From the very first tunes of “Great blow for a day job” to the last of “Building a Ruin” people were enjoying themselves. All were amazed with the quality of this band. Each and every instrument could be heard very well. (In the past George’s fiddle tended to get lost in the blur of guitars and drums). For me it was the best concert ever (and I’ve seen Skyclad perform quite a few times) and very much worth the 2 hour drive. Every member was really enjoying him/herselve and obviously felt good about the new situation.
Jolande and me had the chance to talk to the bandmembers before and after the show and ask about their plans, how they felt about Martin’s departure and other private stuff. Among the many good things they told us was that in two months time (July) a new CD will be released. It will contain 14 Skyclad songs (see setlist) from the last ten years (including an up-tempo Spinning Jenny) but re-arranged for this line-up so that people being new to Skyclad will have the chance to buy an album with the new sound. It will be released under a new label although it is not yet sure which one (probably they’ll even release it themselves). A four track CD-single will be released before the CD will reach the stores. They even have plans for making a video!
So, for those of you, who were afraid that Martin’s departure would be the end of Skyclad. Don’t be. Skyclad 2.0 is here for you. It’s a definite case of “Come taste the band”.
